When you're editing or reviewing a Word document, the markup area is where all tracked changes and comments appear. While helpful during the editing process, this area can be distracting or unprofessional in final versions. Whether you're submitting a report, sharing a client document, or publishing online, it's important to know how to remove the markup area in a Word file .
What Is the Markup Area in Word?
The markup area is a pane where Microsoft Word displays tracked changes and comments. These changes appear when the "Track Changes" feature is enabled or when a document has been reviewed using the "Review" tab. Although useful for collaboration, the markup area can clutter your document during printing or sharing.
How to Remove Markup Area in a Word File
Follow these simple steps to remove the markup area:
1. Accept or Reject Tracked Changes
Before the markup area disappears, all changes must be accepted or rejected.
-
Go to the Review tab.
-
Click Next under the “Changes” section.
-
Choose Accept or Reject for each tracked change.
-
To do it all at once, select the dropdown under Accept and choose Accept All Changes .
2. Delete Comments
If your document has comments, you need to delete them.
-
On the Review tab, find the Comments section.
-
Click Delete to remove individual comments.
-
Or choose Delete All Comments in Document from the dropdown.
3. Switch to ‘No Markup’ View
Even after accepting changes and deleting comments, Word may still show the markup area if you're in the wrong view.
-
Under the Review tab, go to Tracking .
-
Open the dropdown next to Display for Review .
-
Select No Markup .
This hides any remaining editing lines or space used for markup.
4. Save a Clean Version
After cleaning your document, save it:
-
Click File > Save As .
-
Save the file under a new name to preserve both clean and tracked versions.
